脱落音(elision)のルール
ナチュラルスピードで話す際、あるべき音がほとんど、もしくはまったく発音されなくなる現象を脱落と呼ぶ。Task 11 の(1)の Top performers の p、(2)の analysts say の s などに見られるのがそれで、以下のような基本パターンがある。声を出しながら確認しよう。
1) 同じ子音の連続による前の音の脱落
[d]+[d]、[f]+[f]、[g]+[g]、[k]+[k]、[l]+[l]、[m]+[m]、[p]+[p]、[s]+[s]、[t]+[t]、[dʒ]+[dʒ]、[ʃ]+[ʃ]、[ð]+[ð] など。
big gains なら、「ビッグ・ゲインズ」ではなく、「ビッ・ゲインズ」のように聞こえる。top performers「タッ・パフォーマーズ」も同様。
2) よく似た子音の連続による前の音の脱落
[b]+[p]、[d]+[t]、[g]+[k]、[k]+[g]、[p]+[b]、[t]+[d] などを指す。
analysts say は「アナリス・セイ」、good time は「グッ・タイム」。
3) 文末の子音の脱落
[b]、[d]、[g]、[k]、[p]、[t] は、文末に来るとほとんど聞こえなくなる。
I have an appointment. では文末の appointment の[t]はほとんど聞こえない。
